Operation Clean Sweep: Why WTC Group Is a Proud Member

In 1950, the world produced just two million tonnes of plastic. Today, that number has surged to over 450 million tonnes. With this growth comes a pressing challenge: every year, 12 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans, threatening ecosystems and wildlife.

Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) is tackling this issue head-on. This global program is dedicated to achieving zero plastic resin loss, helping businesses implement practices that keep plastic where it belongs—in the supply chain, not the environment.

At WTC Group, we take this responsibility seriously. By joining OCS, we’re committed to doing business sustainably, proving that responsible practices can protect the planet and improve how industries operate.

What Is Operation Clean Sweep?

Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) is a global program designed to stop plastic resin loss before it happens. By focusing on best practices for handling, transport, and storage, OCS helps businesses ensure that plastic resin stays in the supply chain—not in our waterways or natural habitats.

Led in Canada by the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) Plastics Division, OCS brings together resin producers, logistics providers, recyclers, and others in the plastics value chain. The program promotes practical, actionable steps to reduce resin spills and protect the environment while supporting a circular economy where plastics are responsibly recovered and reused.

Cutting Edge Technology for Zero Plastic Resin Loss

Plastic resin is the backbone of countless industries, but its management comes with significant responsibility. When mishandled, resin can escape into the environment, contributing to the plastic that pollutes our environment.

Small spills add up, harming wildlife and ecosystems while creating challenges for businesses aiming to operate sustainably.

WTC Group’s state-of-the-art facilities, including two fully automated resin packaging lines installed in 2022 and 2024, are designed to set a new standard in responsible handling. Equipped with pneumatic vacuum lines, robotic racking systems, and automated container handling, our systems ensure that resin is securely contained throughout every stage of the process.

Our Kingsway Terminal is a purpose-built facility that has doubled our annual resin throughput while maintaining strict environmental standards. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and rigorous quality control measures, we’ve created an operation that is as efficient as it is sustainable.

Benefits of Joining OCS for Transloaders

For transloaders like WTC Group, joining Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) delivers practical advantages while addressing critical environmental concerns. OCS offers a clear framework to improve resin handling practices, protect the environment, and enhance operational efficiency.

  • Stronger Environmental Practices: Preventing plastic resin loss helps safeguard waterways and wildlife, reflecting a commitment to sustainability that clients and communities value.
  • Regulatory Compliance: OCS guidelines support adherence to federal, provincial, and local regulations, reducing the risk of fines and ensuring accountability.
  • Operational Efficiency: Improved resin containment minimizes material loss, reduces risks, and streamlines processes.
  • Enhanced Reputation: Demonstrating leadership in sustainability builds trust with partners, customers, and the public.
  • Cost Savings: Effective resin management leads to fewer losses and improved workflows, resulting in significant financial benefits.

From state-of-the-art resin packaging lines to automated quality control and handling systems, we’ve created a process that reduces resin loss while boosting efficiency. By combining cutting-edge technology with OCS best practices, we’re leading the way in responsible logistics.

The Bottom Line: WTC Group and the Broader Mission of CIAC

The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) Plastics Division is focused on fostering a circular economy where plastics are recovered, repurposed, and kept out of the environment.

WTC Group’s partnership with OCS aligns perfectly with this mission. By adopting OCS practices and leveraging advanced resin-handling systems, we’re helping to close the loop on plastic use while ensuring efficiency in logistics operations.

Together with the CIAC Plastics Division, we’re proving that responsible resin management is achievable—and essential—for a better future.
